Humming Along with Birthday Wishes ~

Hi there!  As I’m typing this up, I’m happy to hear the buzz of the saw and the banging of a hammer in the background.  It means my floors are going in, and I’ll be done with this move out/move in business by the end of the day!  WooHoo!  I also get to start my new job tomorrow, so I just have a week of *new*  Winking smile
My mom’s birthday was yesterday, and I needed to make my number 1 fan a very special card.  She has a love for flowers, birds, gardening, her koi pond, my son, etc.  I pulled out a set that I’ve neglected because I’ve been scared of not coloring it to the standards I’ve set for myself – perfection.  lol  While it may not be absolutely perfect, I’m pretty happy with the outcome!

The set is Flourishes Humming Along, the sentiment is from the original Out on a Limb by Papertrey Ink.  I scribbled/doodled in a border because I wanted it to be a bit more whimsical than lines drawn with a ruler.  I think I’ve found my favorite YG Copic trio for leaves too – YG11, YG17 and YG25.  The flowers have a bit of YR31 in the centers and at the base for a more realistic look.  The humming bird was stamped and fussy cut.  The beak is glued straight to the image while the wings and tail are up on a dimensional.  One little petal of the flower is up on a thin dimensional as well.  Oh, and because this is a ruby throated beauty, I had to add a little red AtYou Spica to it – so pretty IRL.  Here are the challenges I’m entering this in:

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Hope you’re all having a great week!  Smile lyss

Refurbished Reject Squared ~

Hi there!  Long time, no post…I know.  I’ll just quit apologizing at this point!  Things have been busy-ish in these parts.  Hubby and I decided that taxes this year would be well spent on getting some long overdue new flooring for our home.  Seriously, our bedroom carpet and padding was original to the house, circa 1984!  Yuck!  So this past Wednesday, our entire top floor and stairwell was newly, freshly carpeted.  Do you know what kind of work that involves???  How about you imagine moving out of your home!  Yes, we’ve lived here for nearly 10 years and the bedrooms have become quite the catch all, especially the craft/tattoo room.  Hee, hee!  The installer even called on Monday to make sure that I was able to get things out of that room, he was that scared!  LOL  Add to the move out, I also needed to paint my son’s room – it was two shades of lime green, so I wanted to take the opportunity while we were on the subfloor to paint.  Ran into a few snags there, but it all turned out so very lovely!  I feel like I have a new house!  Smile  This upcoming Wednesday, we will be moving out of the downstairs portion of the house to get new laminate flooring.  I really like the look of wood, but 1. it’s too expensive and 2. requires too much up keep.  I’ll probably share pics here after it’s all said and done.  IDK, we’ve raised 5 puppies and 1 toddler on the carpet, so I don’t know if I want to show off that before nastiness!  lol  I’m taking this opportunity to complete a much needed deep cleaning at the same time and get rid of things that have been stashed away for entirely too much time.  It feels so good!
Ok, so onto my card.  When the quatrefoil coverplate die came out from PTI, I just had to make a card with it and submit it for publication…reject #1.

I’m really gravitating towards the CAS style of card making…or trying to at least.  Winking smile  Kraft on kraft, simple score lines above and below the sentiment and a pretty Autumn Rose flower with felt leaves.  I loved it at the time, now I look at it and laugh.  CAS but way too simple.  After it was rejected, I got an email from an old coworker asking for a few birthday cards.  Bingo!  Now I get to re-do this!

I decided the flower didn’t have enough dimension, so off it came.  I used a small stamp from the Mendhi Medallion set to add a little interest to the background.  More black was necessary, so I added a mat and embossed the sentiment.  The flowers and leaves are die cut, stamped and colored with coordinating Copics.  Lastly, I added a little Stickles (fruit punch).  I figured I could recreate this fairly easily if necessary, so I submitted this to the next call.  Rejected again!  Oh well!  My friend didn’t reject it!  She loved it and hopefully her MIL will love it too! Here are the challenges I’m entering this in:
iCopic #74: Flowers
ABC DT Challenges: Spring
Cute Card Thursday #209: Anything Goes
Let’s Ink It Up #21: Flowers
Papertake Weekly: tic tac toe  Die cuts, free, glitter
The Pink Elephant #140: Get Krafty!
Thanks so much for stopping by!  Hope you have a fantabulous weekend! ~lyss

Flashback Friday - Paper Piecing ~

My friend Julie always plays along with the Flashback Friday challenges.  As she says, these challenges are so great because you don't have to stamp anything new, just look through your posts and find your *firsts*.  So fun!  This week's challenge is paper piecing - I had to go all the way back to some baby cards I made for a friends store in February 2009!
Sadly, I think she's only sold 1 or 2 of the 10 that I made for the store.  Boy stuff just doesn't sell that well.  I'm thinking I'll take these back and exchange them for something that will sell.  Thanks for stopping by!  ;o) lyss

New Winner & Drucilla ~

Hey there, friends!  Unfortunately, I was never contacted by my Paper Crafts magazine winner, so I must choose another.  Random.org chose #59!

I’ve emailed you to get your mailing address!

Now, I’ve finally made myself sit down and make something.  I’ve had tons of ideas lately, but can’t seem to make it into the craft room to execute them.  I wanted to play along with my girlies over at iCopic with their red hair challenge, so I pulled out Drucilla.  I mean, a redhead is supposed to have super crazy hair, right??

I also had to play with the March Sketch For You to Try.  Dru is a little large for the sketch, but I {heart} the way this turned out!  I know you’re not supposed to say that about your own cards, but it feels good to like something I’ve made again.  As I’ve said before, one way I get my mojo going is to grab a bunch of challenges and pull them all together to make a card.  So the other challenges I’m adding this to are:

Kraftin’ Kimmie Stamps #119: CASE a Krafty girl  I chose one of my all time favorite designers, Michelle Boyer – I adore everything she does!  Seriously, if you’re not a follower of hers already, you need to become one!  I used the same stamp and sentiment, somewhat of the same layout and the cute little wood button.

Paper Sundaes #110: Green or Good Luck  Green paper pieced dress and bloomers

Papertake Weekly: anything goes

The Pink Elephant #138: Lets see those layers (at least 3)

A couple of extra details here: her dress is paper pieced, which meant that I had to stamp her little Voodoo doll again and pop that over the dress.  The pinheads are dotted with black enamel accents.  The teal border behind her is the heart border die from PTI…since it got totally covered on the front, I added one over a strip of the background paper to the inside of the card.  Lastly, the little heart button is tinted with the Studio Calico Mister Huey’s Bluegrass spray.  Such a fun little addition!

Hope you all are having a wonderful weekend!  I’ll try to make my rounds in the next couple of days since I’ve been so very absent from blogland…I got lost on Pinterest!  lol  Toodles! ;o) lyss
